Do you remember our Fashion Week Party in Rio? We had such amazing pictures, taken by Carol Lancelloti. Today we have the pleasure to meet her again and feature her in our weekly Style Interview. Carol is a Brazilian photographer with an amazing online magazine, called A Lagarta. Get to know more about her!

Fabienne: Hi Carol! Could you please tell us a little bit about you and your work?
Carol: I’m a photographer and art lover. But I also love nature and animals. I’m from Rio, but I left the city last year to live in the country. I am really worried about having an eco-friendly way of living and I can do more about it living here. I now live near Brasília, the capital of Brasil.

I started to take pictures when I was in college (I studied Fashion) and fell in love with it. I love fashion photography and love working with images, so when I graduated I decided to open a studio with my boyfriend. He works with publicity and still photography and I work with all kinds of people, from models to pregnant women. I also love fashion journalism and write for some brazilian websites and blogs as well.

F: When and how did you start your online magazine?
C: The first idea came to me when I was at college. I wanted to create a blog that would put together all kinds of creative works, from my friends and from new talents as well. Later on, I changed my mind and decided to launch a magazine instead of a blog. Nobody was doing something like that in Brazil back in 2010 (I mean, a girl’s mag that wasn’t a blog or a website, but a real mag), and I liked the idea of doing something more elaborated. The name came from Alice’s caterpillar (“a Lagarta” means “the caterpillar”).

F: What do you like most about your work?
C: I love the research part, elaborating the themes of every edition, the “inspiration time”. I also love shooting the editorials! It’s my favorite part, really, the moment when I can express myself and my ideas.

F: And what do you like at least?
C: It’s hard to be in an independent project. The worst part is not to be able to do some things that we would love to do but can’t because of low budgets.

F: We really like your photography style. How would you describe it?
C: I always pictured myself answering this question! haha Well, I honestly don’t know yet, because I’ve been a photographer for only 4 years. But I think I’m developing a girlie style;  really fresh, with pastel colors… I also love working with magical themes. Because I am like that, in my everyday style. Even when I do something inspired by dark things, it is still smooth and cute in a way.

F: Where do you take your inspiration from?
C: I take inspiration from kid’s stories, Walt Disney movies, fairy tales books, a work of art, movies… And obviously from fashion (favorite designers and ad campaigns).

F: What’s your take on Fashion? What do you like about the current fashion world?
C: I love the whole fantasy that is still present in fashion. I think that’s what fashion is all about: having the ability to pretend to be another character and have fun with that. That’s why I get excited when I see an ad campaign that is a little bit crazy and not too commercial, or a beautiful and magical fashion show, like Prada’s Trembled Blossoms, from 2007.

F: Do you have any idol? If yes, who is it?
C: I have lots of idols, not only in fashion. They inspire me in every way and every day. Walt Disney, Paul, Linda and Stella McCartney, Anna Dello Russo, Audrey Hepburn, Julie Andrews, Alexander McQueen, Annie Leibovitz, Craig McDean, Solve Sundsbo, Sofia Coppola, Clarice Lispector… to name a few!

F: To close this interview, is there any interesting fact about you or your work our readers might not know yet and you want to let them know?
C: Well, I don’t know if it is that interesting, but soon we will launch all editions of ‘a Lagarta‘  in english. We are working on it! Maybe in July — when we complete 2 years.

F: Thank you so much for your time Carol. It’s been a pleasure to talk you!

The Fashiolista Fashion Week World Tour danced, partied and celebrated with Turkish fashion bloggers in Istanbul this week. Dutch artist Frank E Hollywood painted – live! – a gorgeous dress by Turkish Fashion designer Günseli Türkay on model Nikita de Vries. Our friend Aykun Tasdoner from the blog APOLLO BOY had the pleasure to talk with him.

Aykun (A): What is the reason behind choosing to paint on canvas, rather than applying your art on walls?

Frank (F): When you’re younger, you may want to express yourself in a more rebellious way, like painting outside on walls. However, this makes others judging your art as vandalism. But when you paint on canvas it looks more serious and may even considered contemporary art. It is also more approachable and people naturally want to owe it, so this is a kind of logically evolved process.

A: You have done many portraits of beautiful women. Do you see them as source of inspiration?
F: Yeah, they are totally a source of inspiration, but I am not the only one who paints women, I think that they have a double face that impress me. I mean they can be both elegant and fragile but also really powerful. I don’t portrait them as objects, either. I really like focusing on the eyes, so you experience the feelings. Eyes tell a story.

A: What makes you paint? Drama or happiness? 
F: Definitely happiness. Sure, I also paint when I am heartbroken and the results are kind of different, but I like to be happy when I’m painting.

A: How would you call the genre/movement of your work, when you look at the created pieces?
F: You know, during the 15th century the Renaissance was never called Renaissance. It was only named that years later. Maybe in 40 years someone, probably a critic, will tag my work and give it a name. Either way, I and Europeans specificially, tend to look back, so maybe ‘retrospective’ defines today’s art.

A: What you did at the Fashiolista World Fashion Week Tour in Istanbul is part of fashion. To what extent are art and fashion related for you?
F: Art and fashion inspire and fire each other. Designers are creative people, just look at Marc Jacobs. He creates amazing things, almost art-like pieces. I think artists are often considered half-god creatures. However, couture designers are also true artists. Their pieces are just like paintings and sculptures. A lot of them are also shown in galleries.

A: Model Nikita was quite nervous, as I spoke with her just before the live-action-painting show.  Though Frank previously had done similar things, he never painted a dress and Nikita never modelled for an artist in front of an audience. But in the end, all guests were amazed by Frank’s perfectly painted dress and Nikita’s elegant posture. Yeah, we definitely fell in love!
